Florida Report by Stan Lupo

Stan
with a Tamiami pompano
.
October
is a tough month to fish south Florida.
It's still summer fishing with lots of rain
and high water. The fish were few and
far between.
.
I
caught a nice pompano at Sea Grape Drive
(Rt. 41 Tamiami Trail), and jumped a 4-5 ft
tarpon (both at the riffles by the bridge).
I caught 7 small (male) snook under the
bridge no. 77. Then, I caught a nice
snook (about 24-25 inches) up on Turner
River Road. I had seen her splash
across the river under the mangroves and
cast to her. I watched her follow my
fly and grab it -- truly a pleasurable
catch.
.
I
also fished the bridges in the Keys
(Islamorada and Marathon), where I hooked a
Jack that was immediately swallowed by a
large tarpon. I jumped him before he
broke me off. I also caught blue
runners and pinfish, there.
.
In
addition, I fished the beach at Ft.
Lauderdale (down from the fishing pier) and
caught butterfish, yellowtail and
needlefish, and cast to some large snook.

28Oct07
- It's hard to believe October is nearly finished
and I have yet to hit the water. It's
all good though as I've been tying many
salmon and steelhead patterns. Reports
are that steelhead fishing in Pulaski, NY
should pickup due to the recent rains.
Next month...striper fishing!

- Tipulides (craneflies) have been busily
mating the last two weeks. If you've
gone running for your life because a giant
mosiquito was chasing you, it probably was
one of these. There're not so bad and
trout like them too..
