- It was a beautiful morning to fish the
Delaware River. I managed to be out
the door before 5:00 AM and on the water
fishing before 6:00 AM. I chose to
fish Tumble Falls below Frenchtown, NJ due
to its geological, finger-like rock
structures. Tan caddis were abundant,
but mostly stayed to the trees lining the
river. The caddis were light tan and
size 18. A few bass were seen
rising. I managed a total of six
smallmouth bass and one bluegill. It
wasn't an "on-fire" morning, but
it wasn't bad either. I fished till
10:00 AM, but all fish were caught between
5:45 AM and 9:00 AM. Fish were caught
on "Twister-tail" flies in purple
and tan, and also on Dougherty's
Paddler in orange. Fish
averaged 10-13 inches. I did see one
bass that was roughly 20 inches, 3-5
pounds. A vast majority of the river
was below knee deep, but the falls provided
deeper pocket water. The water was
warm and clear; flow at Belvidere, NJ was
3000 CFS. A seven weight rod was used
with a floating line and a sinking leader --
flies were weighted.
